How does Luke manage to sneak off to Degobah?

In The Empire Strikes Back, has anyone wondered how Luke, an X-wing squadron commander, manages to sneak off and do a weekend Jedi course on Degobah, abandoning his squadron as they try to evade the Imperial fleet?
