Are they just building things cheaper and flimsier as time goes on?

yup, there is no money in producing things that work. I bought a microwave 23 years ago, and used it at least once a day until my kids decided I needed a new one 18 months ago and tossed it in the garbage. I'm currently on my 3rd one since then! Older is definitely better
